Virtual Strategic Leadership Immersion Program Overview Workshop for Federal Leaders

ASI Government sponsored an online Strategic Leadership Immersion Program Overview Workshop on 25 February 2019attended by about two dozen federal leaders. The 90-minute live, online workshop, with virtual breakout rooms and interactivity, showcased the IntelliVen Immersion Program for Federal Executives.

ASI’s significant and growing practice that helps Federal Leaders crystalize strategic intent, align executives with their intent, and then supports leaders in the quest to achieve their intent was highlighted in a compelling case example application of the program’s Change Management Framework. Practice leaders Fred Panzer and Heather Decker hosted the session and participated in the overview workshop along with executives from USDA and Department of Interior.

Also attending was Jim Stockmal who leads the IntelliVen initiative to promote and deliver Manage to Lead lessons, tools, and templates to Federal Leaders.

Participants were invited to complete an advance exercise ahead of the workshop to get a sense for what it is like to participate in the full online program. Individual feedback on submissions was sent post-workshop.

Response to both the program and the workshop has been positive as leaders learn to get clear, aligned, and on track to reach their organization’s potential to perform and grow impact, opportunity, and value delivered!

Throughout the workshop, participants sampled leadership tools that are used extensively in the Immersion Program including:

  • WHAT-WHO-WHY: Your case and target customers.
  • Change Framework: What needs to change and why.
  • Initiative-to-Action: Where to assign resources.
  • Leadership Support: Governance, growth, and focus.

26 participants from six organizations have just launched the program’s winter 2019 cohort. Those interested are invited to fill-out and submit this enrollment form to get on the list for this year’s summer cohort that launches July 10.

Over 250 people registered to attend the one-hour interactive virtual workshop for an executive overview of the IntelliVen Strategic Leadership Immersion Program: Manage to Lead using the Seven Truths. The event was sponsored by the Association for Strategic Planning and widely promoted by IntelliVen, Flevy, and KBGlobal.

Just under 100 logged-in to participate in the fast-paced session. There would have been even more if it were not for the major outage suffered by Zoom while we were getting underway!

Bay Area Leaders Share Experiences of Inclusion & Commitment at IBM

IBM Executive Forum

On October 11, 2018, IBM hosted its third Executive Lunch in support of professional networking and mentoring for up-and-coming Bay Area professionals. The forum discussion focused on under-represented populations in executive ranks, including women and minorities.

About 100 attendees heard area leaders share experiences of inclusion and commitment to press for progress through actions. The leadership event was hosted by Inhi Suh, IBM General Manager, Watson Customer Engagement.

  • Why are diverse and inclusive teams good for business?
    • Short answer: due consideration of diverse input efficiently leads to better results sooner.
    • Supporting logic:
      • No one, not even the best leaders, can do much alone. Good leaders are open to input.
      • Better outcomes result from more input from more sources.
      • The best leaders aggressively seek and institutionalize ways to get diverse input.
  • Tell us how you have made the business case for diversity and inclusion in your organizations?
    • I helped grow a company from nothing to 10,000 people and $1+B over 20-years.
    • We routinely grew at 20+%/year which meant we needed to hire 1/3 of the firm every year (accounting to also replace attrition); essentially, we had to hire the whole firm every three years.
    • We unwittingly got very good at finding, hiring, and grooming people like ourselves which led to two problems:
      • We became insular in that most of us thought and acted in similar ways which manifest as “group think” where we weren’t getting push-back and new ideas from different ways of thinking.
      • There were only so many people like ourselves to find and hire. I.e., we had to pursue diverse populations in order to fuel growth.

In this interactive workshop, attended by about 40, we introduced, explored, and experimented with three straightforward frameworks that are used to increase the odds of achieving an optimum result through effective negotiation. Attendees walked away with new negotiation tools to use in day-to-day work as an OD practitioner.

Kiva Introduction to Negotiations

30 Kiva Partnership Team members attended an Introduction to Negotiations facilitated by IntelliVen CEO Peter DiGiammarino. The session introduced Thomas Kilmann’s five modes of responding to conflict situations, David Fisher’s approach to Getting Together and Getting to Yes, and the JoHari Window. Attendees worked on three cases to apply what was learned.

Key take-aways:

  • Each party has a default mode that is not necessarily the mostlikely to lead to the best result.
  • Be who you need to be. I.e., DECIDE which mode to adopt
    based on circumstances and preferences.
  • Reveal what is unknown to the other party that may be helpful.
  • Seek to find out what you do not yet know that will be helpful.
  • Document your understanding, assumptions, and terms in easy to use form before going to contract.

Using readings, class exercises, fieldwork, guest speakers, analysis, work problems, and cases the course focuses on using tools, principles, and methods in strategy development and implementation to move a system toward its desired future.

The ORGANIZATION CHANGE course premise is that any organization is far likelier to achieve its potential to perform and grow when its leaders are clear about their organization today, where it is headed next, and when they know how it will get there. ORGANIZATION CHANGE presents a straightforward yet rigorous way to describe and assess any organization as it exists and as its leaders would like it next to be in light of external and internal threats and opportunities.  It then presents a way to lay out, launch, drive, and govern initiatives that transform the organization from its current state to its targeted next state.

Ms. Leavitt’s Key Executive Group sought input on best practices to amass coalitions in support of internal change ideas from above, below, and sideways. This virtual work session introduced theory and practical ways to introduce and garner support for new ideas across any organization.

Each of six participants presented personal cases they are working on to explore what more could be done to drive desired change. Participants all left the session feeling more powerful and able to make progress on important pursuits.

Based on their research, publications, and experience Brent and Peter reported on their latest work together including a case study where they recently, and successfully, piloted their approach with a fast growing financial analytics organization whose customers include Freddie Mac, US Treasury, and Capital One among others.

Roman Iwachiw, CEO, attending via Google Hangout, shared that:

“We recently worked with Brent and Peter to implement both the team and individual assessments for our leadership. I’m really glad we did it. We got good information, we got it from multiple angles, and, very importantly, participants all felt good about the process. Another thing that I really liked about it, and that surprised me, was that it was simple and lightweight. It took a lot less time and resources to implement than I expected.

Key points: to take away:

  • The ideal team skill set changes as organizations mature.
  • It is possible to discern a team’s skill mix and compare it with successful organizations at the same stage of maturity.
  • It can be easy to assess and feed back individual executive performance and growth.
Attendees had the chance during the session to  assess their own organization and leader competencies compared to those of successful companies at the same stage of maturity.

IntelliVen CEO, Peter DiGiammarino, received the school’s 2015 award for Outstanding Achievement in Management at the annual awards dinner on May 1, 2015 for “extraordinary management and leadership skills, demonstrated through corporate success and promulgated through teaching and mentoring.” See his opening panel remarks at this link.

Also earning a UMass CS 2015 OAA Award was Dr. Eric W. Brown for Outstanding Achievement in Technology Development for work on the development and management of open domain question answering technology and its application within the IBM Watson system and beyond. Dr. Eric Brown is the Director of Watson Algorithms for IBM Watson Group Innovations.

The workshop was for graduate students, alums, professors, and friends of the University of San Francisco Masters in Organization Development program in the School of Management.

Every organization has, or needs, a leader who sets direction, aligns resources, and motivates action. And while it is true that the power of one committed, clever person can make all the difference in the world, no one individual, even the greatest leader, does anything of much significance alone. The simple truth is that it takes a team to lead an organization.

The action motivated by this truth is for the leader to decide what kind of leader to be and then to attract, collect, and align his/her top team and collect followers. The best leader figures out that it is not all about her/him. It is about her/his organization and s/he can, and should, Manage to Lead his/her organization to achieve a stated vision. The top person’s job starts with managing his/her own self to lead.

The session was hosted by the director of the Masters in Organization Development Program in the School of Business who described the session as:  “…tremendously engaging and the case worked with the audience was very rich.  You gave students quite a bit to think about!
